1.  Storm Front (Dresden Case Files)

Storm Front (Book 1 of the Dresden Files)

by Jim Butcher

Cherry's Rating:

Genre: Modern Fantasy Adventure

Fast-paced, page turner and thouroughly engrossing. Story-telling quality is 5 out of 5. Reader can connect with characters and world-building creativity is magical and believable. The entire series is addictive. All the books in the Dresden Files series always ends with a climax. No cliffhanger endings for Jim Butcher, so always a satisfying read. Every book has a story, no just-middle-part-of-a-bigger-book like some series does.

Harry Dresden is the best at what he does – and not just because he’s the only one who does it. So when the Chicago P.D. has a case that transcends mortal capabilities, they come to him for answers. Because the everyday world is not as ‘everyday’ as it seems. It’s actually full of strange and supernatural things – and most of them don’t play well with humans. That’s where Harry comes in. Takes a wizard to catch a – well, whatever it is the police are having trouble with this time.

There’s just one problem. Business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry’s seeing dollar signs. But where there’s black magic, there’s a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry’s name. And that’s when things start to get…. Interesting.

Magic. It can get a guy killed.

Fool Moon (Book 2 of the Dresden Files)

by Jim Butcher

Cherry's Rating:

Genre: Modern Fantasy Adventure

Butcher said in his blog that a good book is like sex, must deliver a good climax. All the books in this series have a closing and a good climax, as is all Jim Butcher books are.

Business has been slow lately for Harry Dresden. Okay, business has been dead. Not undead – just dead. You might think Chicago would have a little more action for the only professional wizard in the phone book. But lately, Harry hasn’t been able to dredge up any kind of work – magical or mundane.

Just when it looks like he can’t afford his next meal, a murder comes along that requires his particular brand of supernatural expertise. A brutally murdered corpse. Strange-looking paw prints. A full moon.

Take three guesses. And the first two don’t count…

Turn Coat (Book 11 of the Dresden Files)

by Jim Butcher

Verdict: predictable

Still fast-paced. Still a page turner. Still a pleasure to read. But… maybe I’ve read too many Jim Butcher books by now… this book is predictable. By about chapter three or so I already know who the bad guy is. Well, other than Shagnasty and company, that is. Now, that is a term for the bad guys that sounds nice to my ears… Shagnasty… Butcher do invent entertaining words like that. I guess it is one of those things that makes his story-telling so wonderful.

Excerpt:

The Warden Morgan has been accused of treason against the Wizards of the White Council–and there’s only one, final punishment for that crime. He’s on the run, wants his name cleared, and needs someone with a knack for backing the underdog. Someone like Harry Dresden.

Now, Harry must uncover a traitor within the Council, keep a less-than-agreeable Morgan under wraps, and avoid coming under scrutiny himself. And a single mistake may cost someone his head–someone like Harry.
