This book, I think, is a kid’s book (around 10-16) kind of reading. Full of adventures, wholesome fun and a kind of magic which Butcher calls “furies”. It is also enjoyable even to me who is in great excess of 16. I got hooked - pole, line and sinker. Into the series. I would highly recommend this book for those fantasy adventure lovers and if you are looking for a book or gift for your kid. Just an observation on the side, I noticed that Butcher seems to like dogs. He has more than one lot of characters which is of the canine specie. The Canim. The wolf Marat.
Butcher said in his blog that a good book is like sex, must deliver a good climax. All the books in this series has a closing and a good climax.
Caption at the back reads:
For a thousand years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive and threatening races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the furies – elementals of earth, air, fire, water, wood, and metal. But in the remote Calderon
Valley, the boy Tavi struggles with his lack of furycrafting. At fifteen, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light his lamps. Yet as the Aleran’s most savage enemy – the Marat horde – returns to the Valley, Tavi’s courage and resourcefulness will be a power greater than any fury, one that could turn the tides of war…

Second book in Jim Butcher’s Codex Alera. Why he called it the ‘Codex’ Alera, I have no clue. ‘Alera’ I understand. The world setting of the story has a central place called Alera. But the ‘Codex’?... Anyway, this book, I think, is a kid’s book (around 10-16) kind of reading. Full of adventures, wholesome fun and a kind of magic which Butcher calls “furies”. It is also enjoyable even to me who is in great excess of 16. I got hooked - pole, line and sinker. Into the series. I would highly recommend this book for those fantasy adventure lovers and if you are looking for a book or gift for your kid, but only if your kid is already into the series…

Caption at the back reads:
For centuries, the people of Alera have harnessed the furies – elementals of earth, air, fire, wood, and metal – to protect their land from aggressors. But no fury can save them from the dangers they face within. A mysterious attack from across the sea has weakened the First Lord. Should he fall, a bloody civil war is inevitable. The responsibility of fending off assassination attempts and treachery within the First Lord’s circle of spies falls on Tavi, the one man with no fury to call…

Butcher said in his blog that a good book is like sex, must deliver a good climax. All the books in this series has a closing and a good climax.
Caption at the sleeve reads:
After two years of bitter conflict with the hordes of invading Canim warriors, Tavi of Calderon, now Captain of the First Aleran Legion, realizes that a peril far greater than the Canim exists – the terrifying Vord, who drove the savage Canim from their homeland. In desperate attempt to marshal their forces against their mutual enemy, he proposes attempting an alliance with the Canim.
But his warnings go unheeded. The Senate’s newly appointed military commander, Senator Arnos, has long desired to wipe out the Canim “scourge,” as well as the Aleran slaves who have chosen to throw their lot in with the wild warriors who freed them rather than return to bondage.
Now, Tavi must find a way to overcome the centuries-old animosities between Aleran and Cane, slavemaster and slave, Citizen and Proletarian, if an alliance is to be forged. And he must lead his legion in defiance of the law, against friend and foe – before the hammer stroke of the Vord descends on them all.
